A key feature of many infrastructure projects, it’s vital that embankments are constructed with a firm and stable foundation. On weak and difficult soils this can present numerous challenges. However, Tensar has a number of ways around this problem avoiding the need for expensive excavation and replacement of the soft soil or piling.
How Tensar can help
The TensarTech Stratum Mattress System is worthy of consideration when stability and the need to control differential settlement, as well as the reduction of both maximum settlement and lateral spread are crucial. The Stratum system is basal mattress, usually 1m deep, rapidly fabricated on site from geogrids to form a continuous open cellular structure, which is filled with granular material. It can readily accommodate vertical band drains to accelerate consolidation settlements.
Basetex high strength knitted geotextiles can be installed, usually as a single layer, to reinforce and enhance the base of embankments, therefor providing additional stability against deep seated shear surfaces. They can be used to reduce or even avoid staged construction periods, assisting in keeping projects on time and on budget. They can also be used to span potential voids in areas over mineworkings or dissolution features.
