Over 40 people attended a design training workshop for the TensarSoil program in Jakarta on 10th July 2019. PT Multibangun Rekatama Patria, our exclusive distributor in Indonesia, jointly organised and coordinated this workshop with Tensar International. The purpose of this type of workshop is to provide both background information as well as a detailed understanding of design methods for reinforced soil retaining walls and steep slopes by hands-on operation of the program ‘TensarSoil’ Before the first session started, we entertained the attendees by showing a video created by PT Multibangun Rekatama Patria about a recent large retaining wall built in Jakarta. This wall was part of a major project from the Indonesian government to build a rail link from the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to the Jakarta city centre. After a local project overview, we started the first session with an introduction to reinforced soil, breaking down the design method into three main components: material properties, a method of calculation and factors (safety factors or partial factors). In this style of workshop, the participants make use of the software from the very beginning, learning where to find parameter inputs, and then looking at the results of calculations on-screen in their own computers. The sessions after lunch were hands-on design exercises making full use of the new Version 2.09.07 of TensarSoil, covering retaining wall design using the Bautechnik method to allow users to become familiar with all aspects of data input and the calculation technique. In this session, we also introduced the SierraScape facing system and technology. In order to break up the sessions and provide some relief from looking at their computer screens, the participants were shown an interesting video about the collapse of a deep excavation, and the subsequent collapse of a building into the failed excavation. Apart from being a shocking video, it also provides a graphic reminder about the importance of good geotechnical design to avoid such a situation. In the final session, the participants learned about using the AASHTO/LRFD 2-part wedge method of design.

Michael Dobie, who delivered the sessions, closed the workshop by presenting prizes to participants for the best ten results in a simple design competition. They were given a simple design task to find a suitable geogrid layout for a mining dump wall, with the slight complication that were two loading cases: one with the truck and one without the truck but with earthquake loading. This required that the final design was found by manual adjustment until both load cases were satisfied. It was an interesting case, and the best designs were very close to being correct. The prizes were all the same, being a book on Soil Mechanics by Dr Laurie Wesley. This Indonesian language book was first published in 1972, but Laurie has recently updated it, and it has been re-published. The idea of having a design competition certainly added some fun and interest at the end of the long workshop day, and it was the first time that we have tried this.

This workshop has been designed to help deliver professional development training activities to consultants, contactors and government engineers to develop their knowledge and skills in achieving satisfactory designs for the cases examined. We received positive feedback from all participants, and we open the opportunity to other countries to enhance their knowledge and skills in using Tensar software for any kind of project.
