The road to sustainable pavements

Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) required the upgrading of Al Faya – Seeh Shuaib E75 (one of the main roads between Dubai and Abu Dhabi) to a dual carriageway to ease traffic flow and the transportation of goods.

Benefits:

  • Saving of AED 3.6 million with Tensar value engineered solution
  • 20km of roads built with optimised Tensar pavements
  • 10% reduction in carbon footprint was achieved compared to the conventional design
  • Accelerated construction programme including installation, filling and compaction
Client Challenges

The client needed the road to be constructed more quickly, economically and sustainably than would be possible with a conventional pavement design. The requirement was to reduce the individual pavement layer thicknesses and therefore increase the cost-effectiveness of the road. At the same time, all performance and project specifications had to be maintained.

Tensar Solution

The 20km long road consisted of 6 different types of pavements. Tensar geogrid was incorporated into the aggregate base course to create mechanically stabilised layers for all types of pavements. Introduction of Tensar geogrids in mechanically stabilised layers reduced the individual pavement layer thicknesses thereby increasing the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of the road.

Tensar provided technical site assistance to the contractor’s engineers for correct installation of the geogrid in the pavements.
